Surah Al‑Ikhlas (The Sincerity) – Benefits, Virtues & Practical Guidance

Surah Al‑Ikhlas (Qur’an 112) is a four‑verse declaration of pure monotheism. The Prophet ﷺ described it as “equal to a third of the Qur’an” and said that loving it for its description of the Most Merciful is a cause for Paradise. Below you will find every claimed benefit graded by the strength of its evidence, classical Sufi commentary, and practical guidance on when and how to recite it — all without promising worldly outcomes.

What the Surah Is About

Revealed in Makkah, Surah Al‑Ikhlas consists of four concise verses that affirm Allah’s oneness, self‑sufficiency, and transcendence:

قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ

“Say: He is Allah, the One.”

اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ

“Allah, the Eternal Refuge.”

لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ

“He neither begets nor is born.”

وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ

“And there is none comparable to Him.”

The surah negates any partnership, offspring, or likeness, establishing tawḥīd al‑ulūhiyya (the oneness of worship) and tawḥīd al‑asmāʾ wa‑ṣ‑ṣifāt (the oneness of names and attributes). Its brevity makes it easy to memorize, yet its theological depth has made it a cornerstone of daily dhikr, morning/evening adhkār, and the “three Quls” recited for protection.

Authentic Virtues (Grade A)

  • Reciting it with Al‑Falaq and An‑Nās three times each morning and evening suffices against all things. Sunan Abī Dāwūd 5082; Jāmiʿ al‑Tirmidhī 3575 [VERIFY]Grade A.

Sufi & Classical Insights

Al‑Qushayrī (d. 465/1072), Lataʾif al‑Ishārāt. He explains that as‑Ṣamad denotes the One to whom all creation turns in absolute need. The heart that internalises this reality finds its anxieties dissolve because every need is referred to the only True Refuge.

Ibn ʿAjība (d. 1224/1809), Al‑Baḥr al‑Madīd. He draws a linguistic parallel: the word ikhlāṣ (sincerity) shares the root kh‑l‑ṣ with the surah’s name Al‑Ikhlāṣ.
