“Istikhara” means to seek goodness from Allah (Exalted is He), meaning when one intends to do an important task they do istikhara before the task. According to Bukhari, Volume 2, Book 21, Number 263:

Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika wa as’aluka min fadlikal-azim. Fa innaka taqdiru wa la aqdiru wa ta’lamu wa la a’lamu wa anta ‘allamul ghuyub.

Allahumma in kunta ta’lamu anna haola-alaika ghayru mukhtalifin faqdirhu li wa yassirhu li thumma baarik li fima anta a’taytu bihi.

Translation: “O Allah, I ask You for guidance by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek strength by virtue of Your power. And I ask You for a good end in this life and in the Hereafter. You are capable of doing everything, and You know everything.”

After reciting this du’a, close your eyes and earnestly make dua (supplication) to Allah for guidance.

What Is the Meaning of the Words in the Istikhara Prayer?

When you recite the Istikhara prayer, you’re asking Allah for guidance in making a big decision. You want to know if what you’re about to do is the right thing, and you want His blessing on it.

The words of the Istikhara prayer are:

“Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi’ilmika, wa astaqdiruka bi-qudratika, wa as’aluka min fadlika al-khaira wa ‘al-ain. Allahuma in kunta talamu anna hadha al-amra khayrun li fi dini wa maqamati wa aqibati amri, faqdirhu li wa yassirhu li, thumma baarik li fi hali.”

This prayer is translated to: “O Allah! I seek Your guidance by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek power through Your might, and ask of You from Your infinite bounty; goodness and blessings sufficient for me and for my needs that are near and those that are far away. O Allah!

If You know this matter (about which I have asked) to be good for me both in this world and the next, then decree it for me and make it easy for me, and bless me therein. But if You know this matter to be bad for me both in this world and the next, then turn it away from me and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and bless me therein. And protect me from the evil of what You decreed.”
